Game Recap: Michigan vs. Coppin State

Now that was Michigan Basketball. Finally. The Michigan Wolverines beat Coppin State 72-56. Zak Irvin and the Wolverines took off early against an undersized and under matched squad and never looked back.

Michigan started 10-for-13 from the floor, and shot an impressive 63% in the first half. Irvin had 11 points, and Derrick Walton Jr. had seven assists at the break. At one point during the night Michigan showed signs of the same team that lost four straight when they went four minutes without a basket. The Wolverines struggled against Coppin State’s 2-3 zone for a bit, but recovered quickly and took a 42-26 into the half.

Michigan came out hot again after the break and kept up the scoring throughout the second half. They showed excellent spacing and kept the passes crisp in the last twenty minutes of play. It was good to see the Wolverines spread the wealth and play solid team basketball tonight. It is also a lot of fun when the subs get a chance to play at the end of the game, including Austin Hatch who got his usual standing ovation and first collegiate point!

Six players had eight or more points for the Wolverines tonight. Ricky Doyle had a career high in points, scoring 16, and Walton Jr. finished with a career high nine assists.

Most importantly, Michigan ended their terrible four-game losing skid, improving to 7-5 on the season. Leaving John Beilein and Michigan faithful happy, for now.

Michigan gets a mini holiday break as they don’t play again until Tuesday, December 30^th when they host the Illinois Fighting Illini at Crisler Center. Big Ten play is around the corner, so let’s see what Michigan squad shows up.
